What do I do if it rains on my elopement day?

Kate and Andy had one of those magical drizzly Oregon days for their October elopement. So many couples worry about rain on their elopement day, but I honestly think a little rain makes for even better photos. (Check out Kate and Andy's elopement below for proof!) :)

The PNW wouldn’t be what it is without the rain. It’s what makes the forests so lush, the waterfalls so powerful, and the air smell like fresh pine and earth. When the clouds roll in and a soft drizzle starts to fall, the world gets quieter, colors pop, and there’s this cozy intimacy that’s hard to recreate on a sunny day. Mist weaving through the evergreens? That’s the stuff of cinematic dreams.

Honestly, some of my favorite elopement photos ever have happened on rainy days. There’s something raw and emotional about the way couples cling to each other when the weather turns wild — it’s real, unscripted, and beautiful. You can see the joy and adventure in their eyes, and it feels so true to the PNW spirit.

And here’s a little secret: even though the Pacific Northwest has a reputation for being rainy, it rarely rains all day. More often, it’s a passing shower or a mix of sun breaks and mist — the kind of weather that keeps everything feeling alive and unpredictable in the best way.

There really is a key to the perfect elopement day...

More than anything else, the key to a perfect elopement - rain or shine - is all about how you approach it. I have always loved this quote from Thoreau when it comes to everything in life, but elopements are not an exception. "It's not what you look at that matters, it's what you see." If you go into your day thinking, “I’m going to enjoy this and have fun with it no matter what,” the weather simply becomes part of the story — not the main character. That kind of mindset turns what could be seen as an obstacle into one of your favorite memories. Because when you lean into the moment, when you laugh through the rain and choose joy anyway, that’s when the magic really happens. This isnt just about weather either. It applies to everything. Things can change or go diffenrelty than planned. But I can tell you that the best elopement experiences I've ever had with couples are ones where everything doesnt go as expected. Your attitude is everything!

Why rain doesn’t ruin your elopement

Your elopement isn’t about chasing perfect conditions — it’s about celebrating your love, exactly as it is. Rain reminds us that beauty doesn’t always mean sunshine. It’s about slowing down, laughing through the unexpected, and making memories that feel alive and unfiltered.

When you look back years from now, you won’t be thinking, “I wish it hadn’t rained.” You’ll be thinking, “Remember when we kissed under that waterfall while the rain poured down? That was us.

So, if the forecast looks gray, don’t panic. The Pacific Northwest was made for moody skies and wild hearts. We’ll make it work — and I promise, it’ll be unforgettable.

A really great photographer has the ability to adapt almost immediately, and to find inspiration in any given moment - planned or not.
