Emily and Grayson's Intimate Rogue Valley Wedding


I'll never forget Emily and Grayson, their historic venue, or the perfect moody vibe of their beautiful, drizzly, November wedding day. The couple originally planned to get married on their land in southern Oregon, but plans changed when they found this perfect historic inn and vineyard overlooking the Rogue Valley.


Everything about Hummingbird Estate just exudes peace, heart and charm. I'll never forget the stunning view of the vineyard from my room's antique paned window, and the soft rays of early morning sun weaving through the crimson leaves of the Japanese maple that stood just a few feet away. You know how there are just some memories you can visualize in extraordinary clarity for years? That view is one of mine.


The day started with all of that wonderful "getting-ready anticipation" that I absolutely love to photograph. Families were an integral part of the process. There was warmth, support, and connection. There was nervous excitement. Everything was as it should be.

We ended up with light rain that day - it was November in Oregon after all. But honestly, I can't I imagine Emily and Grayson's wedding day any other way. It's something you can't plan for.. weather.. but I think that's part of the reason why rainy wedding days are some of my absolute favorites (aside from the way the photos always turn out! How beautiful are umbrellas in photos?? Come ON!)


So there's usually a really different vibe between weddings and elopements. The couples who plan an elopement with me inevitably end up embracing the fluid energy, flexibility, and a carpe diem attitude that elopements require. It's hard not to when you're exploring nature together without any guests to manage.


But weddings have more people - which means more moving parts - which means less room for complete flexibility. So when rain shows up at a more traditional wedding, it provides an opportunity for everyone involved to let go of rigidity and control, and to be present for the emotion of the day. And since THAT is the BEST kind of wedding day, rain is always a bonus in my book. :)
